Discovering Monetsu: The Sound of “Signs”

One of the hardest-working hip-hop brothers of mine from Limpopo, DJ Choccos, created a WhatsApp group a while back with the intention of connecting rappers across the province, especially from the Sekhukhune region. As Illythehost, I’m mostly there just listening, because every day rappers share their music in the group.

Yesterday, as I was leaving the office, I decided to check the group for new drops — and best believe, one song really caught my attention.

The artist goes by the name Monetsu, and the track is titled “Signs,” which dropped this past Tuesday on Spotify.  Featuring Smash take 05 and produced by Tukid, which is even crazier is that he currently has 0 monthly listeners, and this is the only song on his profile. I’m not even sure if he’s on social media yet, but the track is genuinely dope and surprisingly catchy.

It’s a unique blend of full Sepedi with touches of Setswana, and lyrically, Monetsu delivers beautifully. The rhymes are sharp, there are solid punchlines sprinkled throughout, and the flow feels fresh.

I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think about the song.
