If you copped the December/January issue you’ll be familiar with ‘Bob Mabena.’ Not the guy Bob Mabena, but the awesome song based on the guy, which was featured on producer, pH’s, ‘The pH Project Vol.2’ Hype Sessions tape that accompanied that issue.
On Thursday, JR released a secondary version of the song, this time enlisting the help of the Future Mfana, Okmalumkoolkat, and one of our favourite interviewees here at HYPE, Spoek Mathambo.
An interesting combination of forward-thinking, art-first driven musicians, it is interesting to listen to how their sounds come together on this joint.
“Me, JR and SpoekMathambo worked on a this track a couple of weeks ago. Its finally out!” the Dirty Paraffin rapper posted on Instagram. Maumkoolkat then went on to praise the song for its commemorative undertone and also revealed his zealous love for TV and radio O.G Bob Mabena. “This one is for the new new but carries a lot of heritage for the youth. I feel blessed to be in the forefront of youths that celebrate local heroes like Bra Bob Mabena. The man is definitely someone to look up to. From being part of the whole BopTv shandees to making Metro FM very kool in the 90s. Taking television presenting to the next level with Melanie Son on Studio Mix. Introducing a lot of South Africans to Makaveli ( Tupac Shakur ) to being one of the first Tv x radio personality to record and put out an Ep ( Get Funky ) . A real inspiration to me!
Now we hate to take it there (not really) but as Kendrick said on ‘Control’, “this is hip hop and them niggas should know what time it is.” And as far as great verses go, Spoek Mathambo delivers his in an impress flow that steals that show.
Listen to the song below and let us know what you think about it as well as which verse is you think’s really got the funk!
