What went down on this day in history

Stepping slightly to the right of rap music, let’s take a look at what went down in the music world on this day, 28 January since the 80s.

1985: Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones,  ‘We Are the World’ was recorded with more than 40 artist. With the proceeds going towards worldwide hunger prevention, the recording took place at A&M Studios in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The all star cast included Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Daryl Hall, John Oates, Cyndi Lauper, Steve Perry and Bob Geldof.

 1995: TLC started a four week run at the top of the US singles chart with ‘Creep’, which was their first US No.1. The video showed the three hot honeys in their silk pyjamas talking about cheating on their men. The song also went to No.6 in the UK the following year.

2003: H-Town singer Keven Conner died in a car accident in Houston aged 28. The ‘Thin Line Between Love and Hate’ singer died when an SUV ran a red light and crashed into the car he was a passenger in, which had just picked him up from the recording studio.

Faith+Evans

2004: Faith Evans appeared before an Atlanta judge after being arrested on drug possession charges. She and her husband-manager, Todd Russaw, were charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine.

2007: Dreamgirls: Music from the Motion Picture went to No.1 on the US album chart. The musical is based on the history of Diana Ross and the Supremes and stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson. ‘ Love You I Do’ from th soundtrack was nominated for the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song and won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

2008: Madonna, who’s recently been in the news for her use of the ‘n’ word, topped the list for the richest female musician, according to Forbes.com on this day in 2008. The list estimated the 49-year-old banked $72 million between June 2006 and June 2007. Madonna earned much of that from her Confessions tour – the highest-grossing tour for a female artist – earning $260 million  worldwide. Barbra Streisand was second with $60 million followed by Celine Dion with $45 million, mainly from her recent concerts at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas
