It’s panning out to be a not so bad year for local hip hop. We’ve already got some cool videos on air this year and the promise of albums to come from the likes of AKA, Tido, iFani and Cassper, among others, is something to be excited about.
The victories at the Metro FM awards this past Saturday are yet another occasion to pop champagne (alternatively, a glass of Oros will do – that’s how we roll). Khuli Chana, who is notorious for being nominated but never winning, broke the curse by beating a long list of artists from various genres to snatch the award for Best Collaboration of the Year for the smash single ‘Tswa Daar’ ft. Notshi.
Zakwe received a well-deserved (but honestly uncontested) victory in the Best Hip Hop album category for his self-titled album. We say it’s been a long time coming and it’s about damn time someone recognise that album for the jewel it is – it’s just poetic justice that it happened in his hometown.
AKA, whose ‘Jealousy’ was nominated for Best Hit Single, is holding on to his two-year long winning streak, snatching up the award and leaving the competition in the dust. AKA snubbed the opportunity to attend the ceremony so that he could open for Kid Cudi at the Blackberry secret gig also held on Saturday, which is not a surprise at all because hey, those gold teeth won’t pay for themselves.
Congratulations to all the artists. For the full list of winners, you can check out:
