Coming across real battle sessions these days is less likely than Ja Rule making a comeback and selling a million records. Yes, it’s that bad. So when one does stumble upon one, whether in radio form, live or on the net, it is something to be relished, especially if it’s good. As unlikely as this is, it’s even more unlikely that you hear a millionaire entrepreneur, TV host and producer, casually devouring an active rapping emcee on live radio through a freestyle like he’s been in the booth for years. One word: Scatterbrain.
YFM’s weekly Hip-hop show Siz n’ Scoop gets heavy some weeks. The show has been running for a little under three years and unlike most Hip-hop shows that follow the conventional sequence of countdowns and requests, this one really takes things back to the streets. Every week the show’s hosts Sizwe Dlomo and Siyabonga Ngwekazi AKA Scoop (currently on the June/July cover) invite all unsigned emcees to the studio to spit on their own instrumentals, written verses, or freestyles for a chance to be heard and win our attention in the hope that they will get signed. The show has produced such talents as Gingerbread Man, as well as Smashis and Kid X (also both on the current June/July issue – make sure you get it) who were picked up by Teargas’s Cashtime Fam Entertainment after appearing on the show.
On last’s week’s show how we were treated to something extra special when Siz invited an emcee by the name of Chippa M who had been attacking him and Scoop on Twitter and chirping to other rappers about how wack the show is. Chippa confronted the hosts on the show the previous week, accusing them of being biased towards certain artists and misusing the platform they’ve created. Siz then went on to allow Chippa the chance to blurt out all his frustration through a battle that he challenged him to and let’s just say that things got ugly very very fast! Siz, who freestyled off the dome in response to the poor emcee’s jabs, effortlessly flowed a capella spitting “He wants to be a star and me and Scoop are here to help you/ but like every single rapper that I rap through, before you get to heaven take a front row seat at hell’s view… My intelligence is much too scary/ I’ve read entire books that you couldn’t pick up and carry”. To put it bluntly, home boi is more than a good head (no homo) and a pair of kicks. Even lyrical giant Tumi was blown away by Siz’ massacre, tweeting “I saw a video of @SizweDhlomo demolishing some dude iin a battle. I just don’t want to ever be associated with rappers anymore.” He went on to say “If a T.V personality aint afraid to battle on his radio show, why these so called beasts so fucking scared of a written league. Shocking.” I think it’s safe to say that no-one will be challenging Scatterbrain anytime soon.
