Women In PR| Anele Melissa Ndebele: Where Culture, Creativity and Brand Storytelling Meet

Public relations is no longer just about getting brands into the headlines. It is about understanding culture, knowing how people connect with brands and creating stories that resonate beyond a traditional campaign. Anele Ndebele is part of a new generation of PR professionals embracing that shift.

A multi-award-winning Account Manager at Ogilvy PR & Influence, Anele has built a career at the intersection of communications, creativity, culture and brand storytelling. With an academic background in Political Science, Media & Cultural Studies and Political Communications, she brings a multidisciplinary perspective to an industry that demands a deeper understanding of people, media and the world around them.

Her experience spans integrated communications, brand strategy, influencer marketing, media relations, experiential marketing and creative campaign development. Having worked across leading brands, including Vaseline and the wider Unilever portfolio, Anele has contributed to campaigns that challenge conventional brand thinking and find meaningful ways for businesses to participate in popular culture.

One of her standout contributions has been on the Vaseline portfolio, particularly through the conceptualisation of ‘Glazed & Glowing’ for Vaseline Cera-Glow. Bringing together beauty, fashion, influence and experiential storytelling, the campaign helped create an aspirational world around the product while connecting with contemporary beauty culture. The work received industry recognition, including Gold Assegai and Silver PRISM accolades.

Her portfolio also includes Vaseline Verified SA, a campaign that achieved remarkable international recognition, winning nine Cannes Lions in its first year, including the prestigious Titanium Lion. Further work has earned recognition at the Effie Awards and Loeries, demonstrating her interest in campaigns that balance creative ambition with measurable impact.

Beyond the accolades, Anele is particularly interested in how brands can use influence and social-first storytelling to become part of wider cultural conversations. Her approach recognises that audiences are no longer simply consumers of advertising. They are active participants in culture, shaping conversations, trends and the way brands are perceived.

For her, the future of PR lies in understanding the relationship between creativity, entertainment, fashion and brand building. It is about developing ideas that can travel across platforms and audiences while remaining relevant to the communities they speak to.

As the communications industry continues to evolve, professionals like Anele are helping redefine what meaningful brand storytelling looks like. Her work is a reminder that successful PR is not simply about making noise or chasing visibility. It is about knowing when to enter a conversation, understanding why it matters and giving people a reason to pay attention.

Understand the culture,  find the story and make it mean something.
