Young Guns, Big Stakes: St John’s vs St Benedict’s Set for Challenge Cup Final

Last week, I took a break from the hip-hop and music grind and went to watch some football — because sometimes, you just need to switch lanes. And honestly? Watching these young ballers live their best lives on the pitch was a proper reminder of why sport and culture go hand in hand.

The 2026 St David’s Marist Inanda Challenge Cup has delivered, and now we’ve got our finalists: St John’s College vs St Benedict’s.  St John’s College are heading back to the final after a dramatic semi-final against hosts St David’s. After 90 minutes ended 0-0, the tie went all the way to penalties. Both goalkeepers pulled off saves, but after a St David’s penalty sailed over the bar, St John’s kept their composure in sudden death to book their spot in the final.

That makes it back-to-back finals for St John’s, who are still chasing their first-ever Challenge Cup title.  Standing in their way are St Benedict’s, who are back in the final for the first time since 2017 — the same year they last lifted the trophy. Their semi-final was a completely different story, cruising past St Peter’s 5-0 to announce themselves as serious contenders.

Now it all comes down to one game. St John’s College vs St Benedict’s, Two schools, one trophy, young talent and big pressure.  The final kicks off at 2PM on Sunday, while St David’s and St Peter’s will battle it out in the third-place playoff at the same time.  From the beats to the boots, this is what culture looks like when the next generation takes centre stage.
