Slikour, MashBeatz, and K. Keed Celebrate Emerging Hip-Hop Talent at Sunlight’s ‘Raise The Bar’ at Back To The City

Sunlight brought the energy to Back To The City Festival with its ‘Raise The Bar’ activation, giving emerging Mzansi Hip-Hop artists a platform to showcase their talent. Festival-goers had the chance to watch live rap cyphers and battles, capturing the creativity and rhythm that drive the next wave of South Africa’s urban music and dance scene.Mentors and industry figures including MashBeatz, K. Keed, and Hope Ramafalo as well as legendary South African Hip-Hop artist, Slikour, were on-site, engaging with participants and celebrating youth expression. The activation underscores Sunlight’s ongoing commitment to supporting youth creativity and connecting culture, music, and community in authentic ways.
At its core, Raise The Bar is a creative platform that invites rappers and dancers across South Africa to express themselves through original performances inspired by the iconic Sunlight green bar – a symbol deeply woven into Mzansi’s daily life and culture. The initiative takes something familiar and reimagines it as a statement of possibility, creativity, and pride.
To join the movement, aspiring talents can purchase a Sunlight green bar, create a 30–60 second rap or dance video using it as their prop, and share it on social media using #RaiseTheBarWithSunlight and tagging @sunlight.za on Instagram and @sunlight_za on TikTok.
From kasi salons to student digs and pre-groove rituals, the Sunlight green bar has long been part of the culture. Now, it’s stepping into new creative spaces – proving that what starts at the sink can just as easily end up on the stage.
