Is 5Tens leaving Hip-Hop to Gqom?

We’ve seen more and more rappers exploring other genres—whether it’s hip-hop artists jumping on Amapiano or, more recently, OKMalumKoolkat diving into Gqom. Now, another talented rapper, 5Tens, has stepped into the Gqom scene with a fresh new project.

Kwaito, Rap, Hip-Hop, Afro-Pop—these sounds shaped our childhoods, now we have Gqom and Amapiano, from the bustling streets on a Friday afternoon to mellow Sunday mornings before church. Each genre has its leaders, representing different corners of the country.

With Gqom Wave, 5Tens brings an electric yet smooth energy, lacing the beats with his distinct vocals. The lead track, iMali Yam’, featuring and produced by Slayer, plays on the saying, money changes you—and 5Tens keeps it real, admitting that money will change him too. The track delivers what we might call private school Gqom—refined, but still raw at its core.

And trust me, you might find yourself playing iMali Yam’ five times (no 5Tens pun intended). But this EP is best enjoyed from start to finish.

It kicks off with iParty, a smooth dance anthem setting the tone—5Tens makes it clear that when he arrives, the party starts fresh. A bold message for an artist who could be seen as “late to the game,” but he’s here now, and the real party begins.

Kusasa follows, continuing the high-energy vibe—after all the partying, he’ll only be back tomorrow. This marks the transition into the heavy Gqom sound.

iStoko blends Gqom with rap, showing that 5Tens isn’t letting go of his hip-hop roots just yet. Here, he channels a mix of OKMalumKoolkat and Tony Dayimane over a thumping Gqom beat.

Then there’s Abelungu—a deep Gqom banger destined to take over Durban, the Eastern Cape, and Cape Town. Expect this one to have dance floors moving.

Gqom Wave is out now on all DSPs. Check out the links to Spotify and Apple music.
