Exclusive Interview: The GOAT conversation with Maglera Doe Boy

While Kilo was busy with the shoot, we sat down with Maglera Doe Boy to ask him about his friendship with Kilo, how they met and who he considers the greatest of all time (GOAT) in South African hip-hop right now. Not only did we discuss his relationship with Kilo, but also his upcoming work and some major announcements that he is about to make very soon.

MagleraDoeBoy: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. You are now tuned into the township.  I am your host with the most.  My name is Tokelo, I come from Maglera and they call me Maglera Doe Boy.

Do you feel that you are the goat of rap right now?
I feel like South Africa is a country that’s birthed some of the greatest, from your Mariam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Zola, 25K, Maglera Doe boy. So, I feel like I’m one of them for sure. But if we’re talking currently, yeah.

Is there anyone at the moment who can match your work ethic and raps?
It’s only Kilo. I think that’s why he’s my best friend even. Not just like now but in general. We have the same amount of drive, we relate and we grew up the same way too.

Given an opportunity to work on a joint album with Kilo, what would you name the album?
It’s not even an opportunity, I know we’ll do it.  We’ve always wanted to do it at the right time. But yeah, I think it would be sourced from what we come from. We  come from street culture, me and this guy have seen the most illegal of things, we’ve seen people die and we’ve seen the saddest of stories. It would be something with substance… we might call it ‘something with substance’.

So how did you meet up with Kilo?
Interesting story…DJ Sliqe was working on his album Injayam Vol 2, and he featured us on a song called “Fresh Jig” and it was Kilo, Champagne69 and myself. We just vibed immediately after we met.  When you both come from street culture, it’s very easy to like or have a dislike from each other. But when we met, we just spoke for a second. We’re really tapped in but then we hung out in the interim of making our first joined album with Sliqe. It was called Champion Music, and we just spent more time together, we ended up visiting each other, I saw his mother’s house and I met his childhood friends. He showed me around his hood. He even told me like “Yo, when you’re in PTA, just call me even if I’m not here just for the boys to move you around”. Then we ended up just having our own relationship, bro.  This is my friend; we speak more than we make music. We have our own relationship. We were in Mozambique recently and it was a boy’s vacation but also, we went to shoot while we were there. He even scolds me when we don’t speak.

Lastly, you as Maglera what are you working on and when can we expect new music from you, videos and everything?
It’s crazy because one of the people who ask me this knows exactly what’s going on.  But I got a little surprised in the next few. I don’t want to say weeks or months, but I got a surprise. Obviously, we’ve got a Maglera tape on the way, also I’m giving you guys a bit of an exclusive, I just signed a very big deal. Winter won’t end without you guys seeing music.  It’s my birthday next month, you guys know I always drop something. There also might be a project and the might be a video too. This last quarter is me and Kilo.
