Dee Koala’s ‘Khaltsha’ Paints A Vivid Image of Khayelitsha

It said that hip-hop is meant to be about authentically representing your reality. With that being said, Western Cape artists are known for doing exactly that through both their lyrical content and sonics.

Adeptly titled ‘Khaltsha’, the song is a nod to Dee Koala’s hometown of Khayelitsha. From the onset, the song features sinister sounding keys with an equally dark bass line to match, and that sets the sonic landscape for Dee Koala to open up the song. Delivering her trademark flow in isiXhosa, the verse brings to life everything we love about Dee Koala as an artist.

The gritty song is irregular in its construction in the sense that it doesn’t have a chorus, which perfectly suits YoungstaCPT. The seasoned veteran delivered a chilling verse that speaks about the realities of growing up in Cape Town, which is quite a chilling story for those that aren’t familiar with Cape Town. Listen to the song below.
