#BEAUTYOFBLEND WITH YOLOPHONIK

Here we are with another #BeautyOfBlend look into South Africa’s diverse cultures and how they all impact on and evolve each other in collaboration with Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey. This time around we highlight young Pretoria-based producer Andrew Masondo aka Yolophonik, who is fast becoming amongst the most sought out producers purely based on his ability to deliver a variety of sounds as well the ability to collaborate with a range of artists to offer something new.

Yolophonik is definitely is a part of a new wave breed of producers that are breathing new life into the SA music scene by blending cultures, thoughts & ideas to help shape and improve modern-day South Africa in their own ways. This is one of the many reasons why he features on this month’s #BeautyofBlend editorial series.

What is your belief in the benefits of blending cultures and perspectives?

I guess my belief in blending the cultures would definitely be just a fusion of different things coming together rather… I can put it into a musical perspective like collaborating with a Kenyan artist if you’re based in like the UK for example.

I would say if there was more blending within the different cultures we would get a very interesting variety of music – Yolophonik

So what do you think the benefits would be for Mzansi if more cultures and communities blended?

I would say if there was more blending within the different cultures we would get a very interesting variety of music. I think we’d find ourselves in a very creative space because now we’d be able to inspire one another and I would find that quite beautiful actually.

So what goes through your mind when you think of the phrase ‘Beauty Of Blend’?

My definition of #BeautyOfBlend is that there is beauty in blending. So it’s quite important to just mix things once in while… I would say as a creative myself, I would always like to try different genres and also take influences from different cultures as well and try blend that into my music to just create something interesting rather than it being a stagnant progression if that makes sense…
