The train of musicians spontaneously dropping projects continues (thank you Prince and Beyonce). Over the weekend, Lupe Fiasco had a surprise mixtape release and today local emcee Ginger Trill has follows suit with the Mo’Better EP.
If you’re a movie buff or above the 35-year old age mark, the title of the mixtape might sound familiar. It is derivative of the 1990 Spike Lee directed film Mo’ Better Blues starring Spike himself, as well as Wesley Snipes and Denzel Washington. Trilli takes a page of out the musical film to set the foundation for his highly musical tape, which also contains skits from the film to tie the mixtape narrative into a cohesive piece of work.
Trilli kept it lean on the features, only enlisting vocalists Amy Jones and Lebolukewarm for feeling, and then recruiting Smashis and Riot to lace bars on tracks ‘Come Up’ and ‘Stop It’ respectively.
If you know one thing about the lethal spitter, it’s to expect lyrical gems every other bar and this tape is no different. Do the right thing by giving it a listen or and let us know what you think.
