YMCMB and Mrs & Mrs Carter dominate BET awards

231817105,1DA89A5E2DD225B3728The annual BET awards took place on 29 June at the Nokia Theatre in LA, and South Africa was proudly repped by Mafikizolo. Although the duo went home empty-handed, losing out to Davido for Best International Act: Africa, the pair no doubt relished in the A-List pool of celebs, as well as witnessing history in the making. With artists from Nicki Minaj and Usher given performances worthy of standing ovations, to Chris Brown’s first live performance since being released from prison, to Lionel Richie receiving a lifetime achievement award, the night was magical.

Nicki Minaj took the Best Female Hip Hop award home for the fifth time in row, saying that: “I don’t take it for granted. I really don’t. I thank God that I’ve been placed in a position to do something and represent women in a culture that is so male driven.” Her fellow YMCMB labelmate, Drizzy, took home Best Male Hip Hop award, while Jigga and his Queen Bey ended the show with a prerecorded performance from their current world tour.
