Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel was sentenced to life in prison this week for the murder of an old associate, Clive “Lizard” Williams, in August 2011.
The artist and four other co-accused were found guilty of murder last month after a trial that lasted over 65 days, the longest running criminal hearing in the history of Jamaica’s circuit court system. In 2013 he also stood trial of another separate murder case and was found not guilty.
So who is Vybz Kartel? He is well known for working with big names such as Jay-Z and featured on the remix of Rihanna’s hit single “What’s My Name?” Other rappers who have worked with the Jamaican artist include Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, and Akon.
