On Thursday, 27 March 2014, HYPE Magazine, in association with Bacardi and Coast Studios, will host the first instalment of the half exhibition, half-music concept experience, titled ‘Synesthesia: Seeing Sounds.’
An extension of the notoriously incredible HYPE SESSIONS events from past years, the experiential initiative merges the elements of fine art with live music in one light-hearted, fun environment.
For the first instalment, HYPE has collaborated with Vth Season artist, multi-award winning musician and local rap pioneer, AKA, following his third trailblazing cover with the magazine (currently in stores nationwide).
Making his claim to be the greatest the world has ever seen, AKA gets into character for a photoshoot (by Grant Difford) that sees him channelling the spirits of some of the greatest that ever lived: Tata Madiba, controversial Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi, Nigerian musical legend & personal hero Fela Kuti, Egyptian Pharaoh King Tut and revolutionary activist Malcom X; each of who’s ideologies AKA has borrowed, to a certain extent, to tackle the challenges one faces as an artist and a (self-proclaimed) revolutionary today.
The exhibition also features works from upcoming artists, including Monde Nyovane (photographer), Sphumulele Phungula (graphic designer), Flo Mokale (photographer), Ally Fathana (digital artist and photographer), Lazi Mathebula (designer and digital artist) and futuristic music and art collective Boyz n Bucks.
All exhibited works will be available for purchase via a silent auction mechanism, where attending guests are welcome to write down an offer for the few art pieces on show. Half of the proceeds go to the upcoming artists and half of the total proceeds of the evening will go to Impilo Child Protection and Adoption Services, a charity that AKA has worked with and continues to work with to bring awareness to the destitution.
