Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto was magnificently mad with heat this past Saturday as 8 of SA’s top crews competed for the Red Bull Beat Battle Crown. Months of choreography coupled with the most fashionable threads and ambitious attitude saw all dance crews taking to the stage with an unstoppable force. Ultimately, it was Clinch Crew and I.D.A in the nail biting finals with the Sbhujwa Kings, I.D.A hailed the winners!
With credible bragging rights, I.D.A fought long and hard to make it to the top. They passed all audition phases which had 170 crews fighting for a place at the finals. They had to outshine Clinch (who made a highly anticipated comeback with a refreshing new team). “This was such a surprise. I kept on telling the guys that we’d only get to the third round. I kept on telling the guys that we should be happy if we got to the 3rd round,” said crew leader, Katlego Mphahlele. “From what God showed us today, we don’t know what He has in store for us. This win means the world to us – it was our first competition and our first title!”
If you missed the dope event, be sure to catch the broadcast on Channel O during the month of June. You’ll get to see the amazing performers, Jullian Gomes, Okmalumkoolkat and HYPE coverboy Reason, Kwaito Legends Thebe and Dr Malinga, Zakes Bantwini and Black Coffee, in action too.
