It’s almost that time of the year; the South African Music Awards are beckoning once again. This morning the nominees in each category were announced and for a change, we think an award show committee got it right (although, there’s always that one dude no-one has ever heard of who pops up in all the categories – standard).
The best rap album category is heavily contested this year and guess what else? All the artists nominated in the category are actually rappers, and dope ones at that. Most noticeably, Last Days Fam, who do not quite have the visual or radio presence as their competition, have been given the nod this year for their album Eternal Effect. They will be going up against Pro’s Continua , ProVerb’s Fourthwrite , Khuli Chana’s Lost In Time and of course Reason’s Audio 3D. Damn, talk about stiff competition; whoever wins this award will have totally deserved it.
This might just be us but doesn’t a spark go off in your head when you read a nominees list and don’t see AKA? It’s force of habit as a result of the dude’s ridiculous winning streak in the past two years, we know there’s going to be some clown on Twitter who’s going to get the #CutForAKA hashtag going once he realises that “the prince of SA rap” does not feature on the Best Rap Album or Male Artist of the Year category. We’re going to stop you in your tracks and point out the fact that AKA has not released a project since his debut album Altar Ego and that was in 2011. His ‘Jealousy’ video is however nominated for Video of the Year and is going up against The Parlotones’ ‘Honey Spiders’ and a couple of other guys whose names we can’t pronounce.
Khuli has also scored well deserved nominations for Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year and is contested in the latter category by The Muufinz and Kelly Khumalo, among two others. Reason also scored a nomination in the Male Artist of the Year category in addition to his aforementioned nomination.
