Kendrick Lamar – New West Coast King?

The Compton rapper hailed by Snoop and Dre as “The new king of the West Coast” has not disappointed. After an impressive repertoire including Section 80, O(verly) D(edicated) and a string of bone-chilling featured verses on basically every rapper’s song, Kendrick Lamar has dropped what is being called an instant classic on the streets, Good Kid M.A.A.D City.

Probably the most anticipated album of the year, Kendrick’s offering received support from the rap world like no other album this in a long time; receiving public daps from the likes of Drake, J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco, Juicy J (Yes, the ‘Bandz A Make Her Dance’ dude), A$AP Rocky, among others, and with Pharrell even calling Lamar “the Bob Dylan of rap”.  Now we have the final first week sales numbers for the LP and they are quite impressive. While the #1 spot goes to Taylor Swift (seriously, who is buying her music? Own up now!) with 1.2 million copies sold, Kendrick’s Dr Dre assisted album lands the #2 spot with a solid 242k sold. In the words of Big Hov: “Men lie, women lie. Numbers don’t.” Congratulations to Kendrick, Aftermath and TDE family on their successful release. Good kid m.A.A.d City is available on iTunes and should hit our shores early next week. Let us know what you think of the album. Overrated or undersold?

Kendrick is now said to be recording a mixtape with friend and fellow wordsmith J. Cole.
