“Aaaahhh A Aaaaaahhh Jealousy!” By now you’ve already heard the song. The rapper with more hate on this planet than paedophile priests has laid down something on wax to let all the haters know how he feels about them. It’s not exactly what you’d call a conventional follow up to the sound he had on Altar Ego but it is certainly not something one can forget after hearing it. A sterling attempt despite being quite formulaic for a hit: catchy hook, contagious sample and lyrics just light enough to capture the playfulness of the instrumental (confirmed to have been produced by AKA himself, by the way. Bravo).
However you feel about the actual song, it’s the video that has really caused a stir. MTV Base Africa premiered the brand new video during their ‘Spanking New’ section, much to the delight of the rapper’s colossal fan base, after a solid week of online frenzy. At first sight, it jumps out to you that the video quality is above average, to say the least (word on the street is that AKA and his people made use of the same pricy cameras as Khuli did for his ‘Tswa Daar’ video, and it shows). It opens up with a scene of the rapper hanging out the window of a speeding beamer that looks like it’s “from outer space”, being driven by none other than DJ Cleo. Damn. Now how’s that for stunting?
Other cameos include manager Tibz, in a scene of them playing chess in a dimly lit room, Twins On Deck, Bafana Bafana’s Benny McCarthy, SABC 1’s Live presenter Bonang Matheba and his BFF’s Khuli Chana, DJ Fanatic and Da Les in a strip club popping Champaign and puffing Cubans. The feel of the video? Think if a younger (and coloured), more likeable Tony Montana went on a weekend debauchery spree with his homies – yes, there is gaudy jewellery, rubberband money and strippers all over the video! On paper, it’s not the most original concept for a music video, but the class and quality with which it’s been executed is quite impressive.
