Young people at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) recently gained practical insights into entrepreneurship, personal growth and building meaningful connections through a YouthX Lives masterclass, under YouthX by Nedbank’s platform. The UJ session was moderated by content creator, entrepreneur and presenter Amahle-Imvelo Jaxa, popularly known as Jaxx Amahle, who led a conversation around “Get Your People” – exploring how relationships, networks and community can help young people access knowledge, mentorship and opportunities.
Joining her were entrepreneur and digital creator Tamia Nontsikelelo Mokoena, founder of Tol’thema, and award-winning entrepreneur Ntokozo ‘Melo’ Ntleko, founder of Takkie Wash SA, Luvuyo Mthimkulu, Senior Marketing Manager: Brand Strategy at Nedbank. Drawing from their own experiences, the panel shared candid lessons on building businesses, navigating challenges and understanding the value of having the right people around you.
The message was simple: success is rarely built alone. For students, building a network means forming genuine relationships that can create opportunities, while also being willing to create opportunities for others.
The YouthX Lives series continued at the University of Limpopo under the theme “Get Your People + Get Your Idea”, featuring Mpho Jasone, Nedbank Sponsorship Manager for Football and Youth, alongside Tshepo Mohlala founder of Tshepo Jeans and Tamia Nontsikelelo Mokoena founder of Tol’thema. The session was moderated by Ndavi Nokeri, Miss South Africa 2022 titleholder, model and investment professional, who guided the conversation as the speakers unpacked the people, personal brand and skills young people need to turn their ideas into opportunities.
The session unpacked three key ideas: Get Your People, Get Your Name and Get Your Edge.
Jasone explored the importance of relationships and community, while Tshepo challenged students to think about their personal brand and what they want to be known for. Tamia focused on the skills, knowledge and mindset needed to stay ready when opportunities arise.
As part of the “Giving the Youth the Keys” initiative, the experience moved beyond conversation, with selected students given opportunities to engage directly with entrepreneurs. Two students were also selected for job-shadowing experiences with Tshepo Jean and Tamia Nontsikelelo Mokoena, giving them first-hand exposure to the realities of building and running a business.
The masterclasses wrapped up with entertainment, student prizes and photos with the speakers, leaving attendees inspired, motivated and equipped to build strong networks and pursue their goals with confidence.
