Berlin Meets Jozi: DJ Midtempo Builds A Musical Bridge

South Africa and Germany may be thousands of kilometres apart, but for DJ MidTempo, the connection can be found in rhythm, basslines and electronic music.

Born Theo Mseka, the South African DJ, producer and business executive moves between Johannesburg and Berlin, two cities with strong but very different relationships with dance music. That cross-continental experience sits at the heart of his debut album, Cheza Kidogo, a 12-track project released on 11 September 2026 via Tahoe Studios.

Rooted in Afro House, Afro Tech, Amapiano and 3-Step, the album brings South African sounds into conversation with Berlin’s electronic and underground club culture. Rather than choosing between the two, DJ MidTempo uses both worlds to shape his sound.

The album continues to pull from home, with collaborations including Luvintage and K.D.M Luminous on “Zimbali”, alongside tracks such as “Nobody Else”, “Sabela”, “Zaka” and “Durban Nights.”

His global perspective also stretches beyond South Africa and Germany. “Kalemela” draws from his Tanzanian family heritage, while “Bu Islak Sokaklarda” and his Afro House remix of “Irgendwie irgendwo irgendwann” add Turkish and German influences to the project.  Interestingly, around 70% of the album was produced while travelling, with DJ MidTempo creating music between flights and journeys across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Berlin.

Away from music, Mseka serves as CEO and Managing Director of immowelt and AVIV Germany GmbH, making his journey between the boardroom and dancefloor part of the story.

With Cheza Kidogo, DJ MidTempo isn’t leaving Johannesburg behind for Berlin. He is bringing the two worlds into the same room and exploring what happens when African electronic music travels without losing its roots.

Cheza Kidogo is out now on major streaming platforms.
