You can read the event description, see the line-up, hear that more than 70 artists and DJs are going to be in one space and think you know what you’re walking into.
You don’t.
On 26 September, Cape Town came alive for Red Bull Unlocked, and Absa pulled up big time.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t going to be your typical night out. Makers Landing had been transformed into a playground of music, energy and culture, with different spaces offering completely different experiences.
One minute you’re deep in amapiano, the next you’re catching hip-hop, Afro House or deep house. Somehow, instead of feeling chaotic, it all just worked.
The atmosphere? Electric.
The music? Non-stop.
The people? Ready.
And then there was Absa.
What stood out was that Absa didn’t feel like a brand that had simply put its logo on an event and called it a partnership. They showed up in the experience.
Through Absa Rewards, customers had an opportunity to experience Red Bull Unlocked in a way that went far beyond simply getting through the door. For the winning customer and their friends, Absa took care of the full Cape Town experience — flights, accommodation, transfers, VIP hospitality and, of course, Red Bull Unlocked itself.
And that’s when you realise: this is what rewards can look like when they’re allowed to be fun.
Yes, we love cashback. We love discounts. We love seeing money come back into our accounts.
But sometimes the reward is the story you get to tell afterwards.
It’s flying to Cape Town with your people. It’s getting dressed knowing you’re about to experience something completely different. It’s walking into a venue buzzing with thousands of people. It’s discovering another stage because you followed the music. It’s looking at your friends halfway through the night and saying, “Guys, what is happening?”
Those are the moments you remember.
Red Bull Unlocked delivered exactly what its name promised. For one night, Cape Town nightlife felt like it had been unlocked — multiple sounds, spaces, artists and experiences all happening around you.
And Absa understood the assignment.
They didn’t just give people access to an event. They helped turn it into an experience.
By the end of the night, one thing was very clear:
We thought we were going to Red Bull Unlocked.
We were never ready for Red Bull Unlocked.
Cape Town showed off. Red Bull did what Red Bull does.
And Absa? Absa pulled up big time.
