The wait is officially over. After three previous Varsity Netball Cup final appearances in 2023, 2024 and 2026, the University of Johannesburg have finally got their hands on the trophy, defeating defending champions NWU Eagles 56–44 to claim their first-ever Varsity Netball Cup title.
For UJ, this one mean more than just a trophy. The Orange Army have been knocking on the door for years, reaching the final and coming up short. But this time, they finished the job, producing a composed performance when it mattered most and putting 12 goals between themselves and the defending champions.
NWU came into the final as the reigning champions, but UJ refused to be intimidated. From the opening exchanges, the Johannesburg side showed intent, building the kind of advantage that eventually proved too difficult for the Eagles to erase.
The final score: UJ 56–44 NWU. A first title. A fourth final appearance. And a moment that finally turns years of near-misses into Varsity Netball history. UJ are champions.
