Detroit hip-hop royalty, Slum Village to Perform at Back To The City International Festival

For the real hip-hop heads, this one needs no introduction.  Emerging from Detroit’s Conant Gardens in the early ’90s, Slum Village was originally formed by T3, Baatin and the late, legendary J Dilla. The group went on to become one of the most influential acts to come out of Detroit, helping shape a sound built on soulful production, left-field rhythms and straight-up hip-hop.

From albums like Trinity, Detroit Deli, Villa Manifesto and YES, to timeless records such as “Tainted” and “Selfish” featuring Kanye West and John Legend, Slum Village’s influence runs deep.

Today, T3 and Young RJ continue to carry the Slum Village flag, keeping the legacy alive while pushing the sound forward. Their recent work, including F.U.N., proves that the Detroit collective is still creating, evolving and connecting with new generations of listeners.  And now, South Africa gets to experience it live.

Slum Village joining Back to the City is another major win for a festival that has consistently created a space where generations of hip-hop can meet. From local legends to international icons, BTTC continues to bring the culture together under one roof.

“Back to the City has always been about celebrating hip-hop culture in its purest form while creating a platform where local and international communities can connect,” says Osmic Menoe.

Detroit is coming to Jozi. Slum Village is coming to Back to the City.  And for anyone who understands the weight of that J Dilla legacy, this is another reason you don’t want to miss BTTC 2026.
