Whenever I think about Pheli Makaveli, I always say this album introduced me to Pheli without me ever having to be there in person. That’s the power of storytelling—and that’s why I consider it a South African hip-hop classic.
And yeah… if you ever catch me rocking white Air Forces with Levi’s 501s, just know 25K had something to do with that. Today marks 5 years since Pheli Makaveli dropped, so let’s take it back and revisit a few reasons why this project remains one of the most influential albums in modern South African hip-hop.
It marked 25K’s official debut album: Released on 23 July 2021, Pheli Makaveli was 25K’s first full-length studio album and established him as one of South Africa’s leading voices in street rap after years of building momentum with singles and collaborations.
The album was executive produced by Zoocci Coke Dope: Zoocci Coke Dope played a major role in shaping the album’s cinematic, moody production, helping create a cohesive body of work that balanced trap, introspection and Kasi storytelling. The project became one of the defining South African hip-hop releases of 2021.
“Hustlers Prayer” became the project’s signature record: Featuring A-Reece, “Hustlers Prayer” quickly became one of the album’s biggest songs and remains one of 25K’s most-streamed and most celebrated tracks. It showcased the chemistry between two of Pretoria’s finest lyricists.
The album introduced ‘The Plug’ to the mainstream: After signing with Sony Music Africa, Pheli Makaveli elevated 25K from an underground favourite to a nationally recognized artist. The album earned critical acclaim and received a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2021 South African Hip Hop Awards, alongside several other nominations.
Its influence is still felt five years later: Pheli Makaveli helped define the sound of Pretoria’s modern trap movement and inspired a new wave of artists embracing authentic Kasi narratives, luxury rap and melodic street music. Many fans still regard it as one of the most important South African hip-hop albums of the 2020s, laying the foundation for 25K’s continued success, including his follow-up album Loyal To The Plug: The Life & Times of Don Kilograms.
