As African music continues to dominate global charts and conversations, platforms like the Africa Rising Music Conference are becoming increasingly important in shaping the future of the industry. We caught up with the team behind the conference to discuss the vision behind the platform, bridging gaps in the African music ecosystem, and what’s next for the continent’s creative economy.
HYPE Magazine: Africa Rising Music Conference has quickly become an important space for creatives and industry professionals. What inspired the creation of the platform?
ARMC:
The vision was always about creating a space where African creatives could connect, collaborate and learn from each other without needing validation from outside markets first. African music has always had the talent and cultural influence, but there’s been a lack of infrastructure and accessible industry conversations on the continent itself. We wanted to create something that genuinely serves artists, executives, producers and creatives from Africa.
HYPE Magazine: African music is having a huge global moment right now. From your perspective, what’s driving this growth?
ARMC:
I think it’s authenticity. The world is connecting with African sounds because they’re real, emotional and rooted in culture. Whether it’s Afrobeats, Amapiano, hip-hop or alternative music coming from the continent, people can feel the energy. Social media and streaming platforms also helped remove barriers. Artists don’t need to wait for permission anymore — they can build audiences directly.
HYPE Magazine: What do you think are still the biggest challenges facing African artists today?
ARMC:
Infrastructure is still one of the biggest issues. There’s incredible talent everywhere, but many artists still lack access to funding, management, publishing education and touring opportunities. Another challenge is ownership. Artists need more knowledge around contracts, royalties and protecting their intellectual property. That’s part of why conferences like this matter — the information gap is real.
HYPE Magazine: One thing people appreciate about the conference is the balance between culture and business. Why was that important for you?
ARMC:
Because the music industry is both. You can’t separate the art from the business anymore. We wanted conversations that inspire creatives while also equipping them with practical tools. Artists deserve to understand how the business works so they can build sustainable careers and not just viral moments.
HYPE Magazine: Collaboration across African countries seems to be growing more than ever. How important is that for the future of the continent’s music scene?
ARMC:
It’s extremely important. Africa is not one sound, one language or one culture. The future is collaboration between different regions and scenes. We’re seeing South African artists work with Nigerian artists, East African producers connecting with artists from Francophone countries — and that exchange creates innovation. The more connected we become, the stronger the ecosystem gets.
HYPE Magazine: What can attendees expect from this year’s conference?
ARMC:
More honest conversations, more networking opportunities and more focus on actionable information. We’re bringing together artists, executives, brands and creatives who are actively shaping the industry. The goal is for people to leave inspired but also with real connections and practical knowledge they can apply immediately.
HYPE Magazine: Lastly, what does success look like for Africa Rising Music Conference in the long term?
ARMC:
Success is building something that genuinely impacts the industry. If artists leave with opportunities, partnerships or knowledge that changes their careers, then we’re doing our job. Long term, we want the conference to become one of the key cultural and business hubs for African music globally while still remaining rooted in the continent.
HYPE Magazine: Appreciate the conversation.
ARMC:
Thank you for having me.
