The 7th uMgungundlovu Film Festival Opens with The Unseen Voice

The 7th annual uMgungundlovu Film Festival (UFF) kicks off from 14–16 November 2025 in Pietermaritzburg, under the theme “Imagine the World in My Image.” Opening night, hosted at the Voortrekker Museum, features the powerful film The Unseen Voice by award-winning filmmaker Jerome Moremi, which tells the moving story of a Deaf woman denied medical care due to language barriers — sparking a movement for equality and accessible communication.

“We are thrilled to open our festival with a film that resonates so deeply with our theme and aligns with Disability Rights Awareness Month,” said Portia Ndudane, UFF Founder and Amadeyi Productions Director.

Now in its seventh year, UFF has become one of KwaZulu-Natal’s leading community film platforms, celebrating authentic African stories and amplifying underrepresented voices. This year’s edition features 33 films from 13 countries, screenings, and skills development workshops designed to empower emerging filmmakers, actors, and creatives.

Day 2 takes place at the Bessie Head Library, offering screenings such as Still Here by Joy Maseko, My Winter Tears by Lindani Msibi, and You Are Not Alone by James Whitelaw, alongside workshops on scriptwriting, production, and inclusion in film.

The festival closes on 16 November with BOBO, a Kenyan drama directed by Maurice Muendo, followed by the prestigious UFF Awards Ceremony, honouring excellence in storytelling and creativity.

Supported by the KZN Tourism and Film Authority, UFF continues to champion inclusivity, diversity, and the transformative power of film.
