Inspired by the aesthetic and storytelling of classic French black-and-white cinema, God is Power explores the origin story of South African artist Maglera Doe Boy through the lens of his younger self. Set in the township of Kanana in Orkney — part of the greater Matlosana area, also known as “Maglera,” from which he takes his stage name — the film stars a young Tokelo Moyakhe as Warlord, the central character.
Warlord navigates the harsh realities of township life, facing off with his nemesis Scorn — his direct opposite in spirit and temperament, yet bound to him by their shared environment. The township is reimagined as Rome, a sacred battleground populated by:
Pantheons of corner dwellers, Mages cloaked in Sotho blankets and traditional regalia,
Oracles emerging from crumbling homes.
God is Power acts as the cinematic prologue to Maglera’s latest musical release under his long-standing label — a home for his Nubian-inspired philosophy and township-rooted storytelling.
