Exclusive: Lizzie Berchie Interview

HYPE fam, you know that we work tireless hours to bring you the very best when it comes to music related content. Recently, we had the opportunity to talk to Lizzie Berchie, a trailblazing R&B artist that hails from the UK. We spoke about her new single ‘Love Deep’ featuring Filah Lah Lah, love in the modern world and more!

Right now, in music, it is popular to speak about music from a negative and toxic point of view. Why did you choose to create a song about loving deeply?

I am such a lover girl and I’ve been really lucky to be surrounded with so much love in my life. My parents are such a beautiful example of love through the ages. They have been married for 40 years and they are still very giddy like teenagers. I also have some amazing friends that have had since childhood and I have a close relationships with my siblings.

I have always been exposed to real love and so I can’t do anything but pour from that place of love. That’s not to say that one doesn’t go through difficulty experiences with love. But, I think its important  to write from a place of hopefulness and forward looking as opposed to dwelling in negativity.

In listening to your song, it got me thinking about love in the romantic sense. What are you thoughts on dating in the modern age where everyone is so accessible and the grass always looks greener on the other side?

I don’t think there is one person out there for you and I know that sounds crazy coming from a lover like me. I do think we are like puzzle pieces with multiple fits for you. Also, there are many other things that contribute to you wanting to spend the rest of your life with someone.

It could just be right time, right place. It may seem like its dark times and there are no good people left on the street but, it’s really just about making yourself the best version you can and you will attract a mirror version of yourself. I do think enduring love still exists and I think we will be a generation that has less marriages but the few marriages that do exist will be meaningful.

I imagine the collab with Filah Lah Lah happened online but can you tell me a bit about the collaboration?

I really wanted it to be in studio and I was planning on coming to South Africa this December but you how the bank account is set up?*laughs* Those SA flights are not cheap anymore. So, I just DM’d Filah Lah Lah loads of tracks we could work on. I am such a big fan of her.

I couldn’t even decide which song to send her so I let her take her pick from the songs I sent her. She got back to me and said she wanted to be a part of the song ‘Love Deep’. As soon as it came through, I knew it was the one. I still def want to get to SA and work with her in person because I think its so immensely talented.

You have a soothing and soulful voice. What do you credit your execution to?

I listened to a lot of Erykah Badoo and she has this beautiful soft music that I enjoy. Im really a church singer but it is a creative choice for me to perform songs in the way I do. It’s really about encapsulating that soft feminine energy and vibe. An artist that does that incredibly well is Jill Scott. She has the ability to perform with a strong tone but also she can be on the softer and sweeter side. She is one of my vocal inspirations.

As a listener, we pick songs depending on mood. I am interested to know where your music would be consumed?

I would say the entire project coming soon is set for a night time theme. ‘Love Deep’ is a bit more up-tempo and can be a day time vibe. For the concept of the whole EP, it is totally a night time listen.

Do you feel as though you have the capacity to love deep in the modern age that is so cold?

Yes, always. I can never give up on love; it gets the people going! It is something that I think we can never stay away from. I have so much love to give and I am truly someone that wants to show love and appreciate people around me, and that doesn’t just go for my other half. It also extends to friends and family.
