The Water (s) Performance in Cape Town

You will be surprised by how connected South Africans are to their music, especially hip-hop. When you engage with hip-hop fans at festivals, you will understand how much they appreciate promoters who bring MCs like Mick Jenkins to the country.

In 2014, Mick Jenkins released one of the hottest projects. This past Saturday, his performance at the Rocking the Daisies Festival in Cape Town felt more like a 10th-anniversary celebration than just a regular performance. Before he took the stage, fans were already gathering and getting closer to the main stage, eagerly anticipating Mick Jenkins taking them on a 10-year journey.

The moment arrived when Scoop Makhathini announced the Chicago-born rapper, Mick Jenkins. It was then that I realized how much South African hip-hop fans appreciate the artistry and fiery performances of their favorite rappers. It didn’t matter if he was performing “The Waters,” “Dehydration,” or “Who Else” – the crowd rapped along the entire time.

One fan I spoke to after the performance said, “The last time he was here in South Africa, I was young and didn’t have the money to fly to Jozi. But when I heard he was coming to Cape Town, I had to make sure I got a ticket.”

For me, this performance was one of the best I’ve seen at Rocking the Daisies this year, right up there with Marcus Harvey and Sjava’s performances. The crowd went wild when he performed “Show & Tell” from his 2023 album “The Patience.” We were all hoping that Freddie Gibbs would make an appearance – it was clear the fans were ready for Mick Jenkins.

For those who missed his performance last Saturday, he will be performing in Johannesburg this coming Saturday. Do the right thing and go celebrate with other hip-hop fans.
