Innercity Cyphers is keeping the culture alive

In the hip-hop community, a “cypher” is a friendly and semi-improvisational group performance where different performers take turns rapping verses to a beat. In South African hip-hop culture, the Innercity Cypher community keeps this tradition alive.

Innercity Cyphers is an initiative started by Tony Dangler in February 2023, creating a platform for freestyles and providing a safe space for rap and hip-hop enthusiasts. This initiative was inspired by the lack of genuine cyphers in the country and the need for a place for rappers to practice their craft outside of the studio.

Initially called Milpark Cyphers, the first few gatherings took place at a skate park, with graffiti in the background and a vibrant street energy. Over time, the gatherings moved to Bongz n Records in Braamfontein, and the name officially changed to Innercity Cyphers. More prominent artists started participating, and it became the most consistent freestyle rap platform in the country.

Looking at this image i just thought of Big L saying, “I’m so ahead of my time my parents haven’t met yet.” maaan this is how much and deep hip-hop and cyphers mean to us.

Innercity Cyphers is known for its positive energy, freestyle rap, and sense of community. They host cyphers every Friday at Bongz n Records, which has been dubbed the DOJO. The initiative has also expanded to other spaces within the city and has visited other cyphers, such as Capital City Cyphers in Pietermaritzburg.

In addition to their cypher events, they have started the Big Jacket Drive, a donation drive aimed at giving back to the people living within the inner city. The drive has been well-received, and it will continue to run alongside the cyphers.
