Tomorrow a fierce battle of the beatmakers is taking place as DJ Tira takes on DJ Maphorisa in what can only be described as a clash of musical titans.
All of this goes down live on Castle Lite Unlocks In Bed With, a weekly entertainment livestream platform coming to viewers on the CastleLiteSA YouTube page. And of the many successful producers in the industry, few are as worthy an opponent as DJ Tira.
The South African musical icon not only makes hits, but his record label has also introduced us to more hitmakers than we can count.He is the personality of any and all songs that he is featured on. Having been in the music business for 20 very good years, his career that boasts industry awards, chart-topping hits year after year, and record-smashing sales.
He is also one of very few musicians who used their talent and stardom to successfully branch out into other business ventures including his highly successful record label and events management company. Together with fellow Gqom music star, DJ Sox, Tira founded the entertainment brand known as Durban’s Finest which released a number of albums but also hosted some epic events.
Tira is responsible for the mega party known as Fact Durban Rocks which takes place bi-annually; once in July during the Durban July weekend and then again on New Year’s Eve. He first burst onto the music scene in 2000 when he won a music competition that saw him jetting off to play for the party capital of the world, Ibiza. He got his first major hit song in 2008 with the release of Won’t Let You Go featuring Joocy, taken from his debut album Ezase Afro vol.1. The album went on to sell 22 000 copies nationwide.
Tira is also very well known for his prolific work with his record label Afrotainment, which has been at the forefront of discovering talent in the Gqom music genre since its inception. Tira and the label are responsible for acts such as Big Nuz and DJs Cndo, Fisherman, and Joocy.
The label made history on the 7th of July 2012 when it became the first black-owned independent record label to host its own marquee at the annual Vodacom Durban July. In the same year, Afrotainment also created the annual New Castle Music Expo, which has now become the biggest music expo in KZN.
In 2019, DJ Tira released his first self-produced album, Ikhenani with 17 songs to ease fans into the festive season. He was also nominated in the Best DJ in Africa category at the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA).
