The year 2015 (and 2016) has been good to SA hip hop through the level of excellence constantly being put on display and sound. The 22 annual South African Music Awards (SAMA’s) have just announced their nominees and hip hop is once again in the spotlight with the likes of Emtee, Fifi Cooper, Riky Rick & AKA leading the pack.
Emtee (who graces HYPE’s latest i’Stayela issue) & Riky Rick are dominating the nominations, with Emtee & Boss Zonke receiving a total of four nominations each. Emtee scored nominations for Best Rap Album (Avery), Best Male Artist, Best Newcomer & Best Album Of The Year (Avery), while Riky received nominations for Best Male Artist, Best Newcomer, Best Rap Album (Family Values) & Best Music Video (Fuseg). AKA and Fifi Cooper closely follow with each receiving two, including Best Collaboration (All Eyes On Me) & Best Remix (Baddest Remix) for AKA and Best Female Artist & Best Newcomer for Fifi. Surprisingly Cassper received no nomination nods this year, after having dominated last years ceremony, as well as Mr. Cashtime K.O.
Other hip hop nominations include; Zakwe earning one for Best Rap Album (Ipande), as well as DA .L.E.S (North God) and Kid X (3 Quarter Pace). Durban’s WTF made it with one nomination for Best Duo/Group (Find Nomusa) and DJ Sliqe (Do Like I Do Remix) and The Fraternity (Bheka Mina Ngedwa Aplified) both received one for Best Remix. Khuli Chana (No Lie) and Major League (Slyza Tsotsi) both scored nominations for Best Collaboration. Ifani & Jack Parow both took one nod for Best Music Video (Ayadelela & Army Of One).
