On 1 April every year the radio industry is turned on it’s head as new schedules and lineups kick in. And we must say that we can’t say that we care for all of them, but this year is significant because of what went down with one of the most important radio hip hop slots probably in the history of the industry.
When Siz n Scoop canned their show after a legendary 5 year run, it left very big shoes to fill. In the time the show did its thing, amazing talents were discovered (including Kid, Smashis, Ginger Trill, etc.), tribute mixtapes were released, emcees traveled from across the country and at times beyond borders to try to match the high standard the show had established. When the show ended about a year ago, the Thursday night slot was left open, presumably because a replacement for a show that commanded such authority in the game would be a tough ask of anyone. Until now.
Earlier this week YFM announced that Vaal representer and artist DJ Speedsta would be taking over the hip hop Hot 99 countdown, which Sizwe Dhlomo previously managed. He will also be doing the hip hop show from 10pm -23:59pm alongside Zai Maya.
Speedy, 22, has been putting in work for over 5 years now as live DJ, and has since expanded to releasing his own very successful songs featuring various rappers. He is also a Head Honcho clothing ambassador, has hosted a HYPE Sessions mixtape and hosts an annual boat party in the Vaal.
Speedy did his first show this past Thursday. We wish the homie luck in his journey.
Other new faces in the YFM lineup include Khany Mbau (Sunday 9am – 12pm_ and Cyprian Ndlovu (Saturday & Sunday 3am – 6am)
