“Pac was like Jesus, Zola wrote the bible” – Zakwe
So Zakwe dropped a joint for free download yesterday, but it’s no ordinary song. The KZN rapper tackled J.Cole’s ‘Let Nas Down’ instrumental to offer his own apologies to his fans.
In the song, Zakwe sounds a little angry, to say the least. He speaks on his abandonment of realness in his music for a while, as well as the state of local rap industry. In an impressive lyrical offering, he goes on to condemn both the public and the industry’s expectations of what rap is supposed to sound and look like; rapping: “I’m tired of wack rappers who wanna rap cos rap is hot. Some of them don’t even know what the underground is like” at one time, and “I wish Rhythm and Poerty (RAP) could be about lyrics/ but it’s sad cos and it’s wack that we legalise gimmicks” in another.
He also addresses his absence in the game and complications with DBN record label Afrotainment, right before promising that the second album is on the way.
