Getting to know Major League DJz

major league

Championing the new sound of hip hop, dubbed New Age Kwaito, we got to chat to twins Bandile and Banele Mbere who have taken the commercial scene by storm.

It’s pretty cool being a DJ; being twins that DJ should be twice as nice…How did the dream begin?

The dream began after high school in 2009. My brother and I thought to ourselves we shouldn’t only be promoters in the entertainment industry, we should DJ at our own events which will market us to get our gigs and that way we can generate income.

Did you guys always wanna be DJs?

Not really but we had a musical background because of my father, we also wanted to do something musically, especially in the music business.

Tell us a bit about the singles you got out?

‘The Bizness’ is our first single out featuring Riky Rick, Cassper Nyovest and Siya Shezi. It’s New Age Kwaito which is a kwaito sampled beat with hip hop influences of rap lyrics.

Hip Hop is?

A street culture of dance, fashion and rap.

m lWhat do you think of the  scene at the moment?

We think it’s doing very well; the biggest song in the country right now is a hip hop track, so now we just need to balance the hype to the album sales. Hip Hop artists need to go platinum and takeover Africa.

Give us the lowdown on your upcoming #MajorLeagueGardens event.

It’s a social festival where you can come and hangout with your friends and cooler boxes (only cans) in a park with a live stage and the best artists in the country and outdoor activities.

At the moment, who is killing it? AKA or Cassper Nyovest?

Cassper Nyovest

Who do you look up to in the industry?

We look up to Euphonik, Shimza, Black Coffee, Culoe de Song, DJ Zinhle and Oskido. These people always inspire us to do better.

Any wise words for the youth seeking to make a career in the DJ industry?

Focus, network and work on your talent. Nobody can turn that down.
