Tumi 16’s For 16 project “They can’t tell my story better than me”

tumi1-real216s for 16 is a youth arts project initiated by Tumi Molekane in 2012 .Through various one of a kind art projects it seeks to reunify and channel the youth voice into an inspired collective force.

Using film as the medium for the third 16’s for 16 project, Tumi has set the goal at curating 16 films for June 16 2014 and calling on all young film makers to send their June 16 inspired one minute film.

Submissions are open to the public for young people aged between 16-34 with the theme “THEY CANT TELL MY STORY BETTER THAN ME” focused on South Africa’s 20 years of democracy. “We feel this project is not only an exciting way to galvanize the youth but also an important tool for expression in a time when political parties are clamouring to stand for the countries future on their behalf,” says Tumi. All entrants/film-makers are encouraged to use the technology available to them to make their own one-minute film about anything they want to. The 16 shortlisted films and their directors/producers will be profiled on the Motif Records website and their broadcast partners.

The Soweto Uprising, known to us today as June 16, is a series of protests which began on the morning of 16 June 1976, led by an estimated 20,000 South African high school students from numerous Sowetan schools. The students began to protest in the streets of Soweto in response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools. 16 June is now recognized as a public holiday, Youth Day, in South Africa, in remembrance of the tragic events of 1976.
