Competitive ego or copycat syndrome? The jury’s still out but Will.i.am is definitely not a happy camper at the moment. After Pharell Williams of N.E.R.D fame launched a YouTube channel called I AM OTHER, Will.i.am sent him a letter of demand for Pharrell to stop using the I AM part of the name, asking a judge to protect his right to use the I AM moniker. The Black Eyed Peas superstar claims that Pharrell is a serial thief who steals names for a profit. How ironic when they both share the same name…
Will.i.am was also upset with Williams when he called his record label Star Trak Entertainment. Will.i.am is a known sc-fi geek, you couldn’t tell? In 2010 he converted part of his mansion into the Star Trek Starship Enterprise. As for what he’s suing Pharrell for? Money of course. (As if he didn’t have enough – or other lawsuits on his back).
Apart from the BEP musician, Pharrell is also being sued by Marvin Gaye’s family for apparently ripping off “Got to Give it Up” for the smash hit by Robin Thicke “Blurred Lines.”
It’s clear that the heat is on Pharrell. Let’s wait to see how he responds, but more importantly, how the judge will rule in all the cases.
