Metro FM Awards Nominees – A lack of Reasoning

The year just kicked off and we are already quickly approaching award season. Last week Metro FM hosted a nominations party for their upcoming annual award ceremony and well, given the relatively mild commercial activity of the final quarter of 2012, we can’t say there were many surprises when the nominees were announced. Noticeable feats include Toya Delazy, who scored three nominations including Newcomer of the Year (it feels like she’s been a newcomer for a few years now, no?); pop star Donald, who bagged four nominations for his combined 2012 release and AKA’s Mrs, DJ Zinhle.

AKA himself, a three-time winner at the Metro’s last year, scored 2 nominations: Best Hit Single and Best Music Video, both for Jealousy. Our word is, if he doesn’t snatch the video award even after Benni McCarthy made a cameo in the vid and they got DJ Cleo riding dirty in that Knight Rider whip, the Metro’s board “better put down that nyaope.” He is in the rapping company of Shugasmakx, Khuli Chana, Teargas, Pro and Zakwe, who are all competing for Best Hip hop album. Who do you think will take this one?

We were glad to see the likes of rookie songstress, Moneoa (featured on Shugasmakx’s Take It Easy and confirmed to be featuring on both DJ Speedsta’s and Cassper Nyovest’s upcoming projects), who got the nod for Best Newcomer; as well as The Muffinz and Kabomo whose 2012 album drops earned them a few nominations each. But one thing we were not glad and super surprised to see was that arguably the most dominant hip hop force of the past year was completely excluded from this nominees list… WHERE THE HELL IS REASON? Do It Like I Can alone damn near got more spins on the radio and on television than the moon’s orbit around Earth. Then you add the hip-hopper’s Skhotane anthem, DJ Fanatic’s Keep Debiting and his exceptionally impressive 2012 album Audio 3D and it seems ludicrous that he went without mention at this year’s event. No wonder he has A Lot on his Mind.
