When she told HYPE “normality is a waste of creative brain power” in her first interview in the mag back in 2011, we knew there was something special about Ruusa Namupala, the colourful rapper from Namibia. In 2011 alone she scooped a NAMA (Namibian Annual Music Award) for her single ‘Million Dolla Chick’ and also dropped a mixtape Pink Shoes which reached radio frequencies as far as the US. An avid writer, skateboarder and civil engineer student, RU has just announced the release of her brand new album Crazy Beautiful.
What can we expect – and who features and produces on it?
You can expect a variety of sounds. On the track ‘Township Funk’ there’s township sounds fused with hip hop. I didn’t want it to sound like anything I’ve heard before so it took me 2 years to be happy with the finished product. I actually have some vernacular lines on most songs, just to root it to my country. It’s has a song for every type of person especially if you really just want to have a lekker time kicking it wit’ buddies. It features people like Miss H, Lil-D, Killa-B and Jaicee Cole, and includes production by Elvo, Nel-d, Morgan and K-Boz.
Are you touring in December?
I’m definitely having a show in the Ongwediva (Town up north) and performing at Nice this Friday and at the 061 summer bash on 1 December. My tour will only start next year… I’m still awaiting confirmation from my management.
